Peru minibus crash: Nine dead and 15 injured in Andes mountain tragedy

March 23, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Nine people are dead and at least fifteen injured after a minibus carrying tourists crashed in the Peruvian Andes on Sunday, according to Peru’s Health Ministry.

The vehicle was transporting holidaymakers on an excursion to Rajuntay mountain when it veered off a highway and overturned near Marcapomacocha, local firefighters reported. The crash occurred at approximately 5 p.m. Local time, roughly ten miles from the 17,969-foot peak.

Seven of the fatalities occurred at the scene of the accident, with two more confirmed later in hospital, the Health Ministry stated. Fifteen injured individuals have been transported to four different hospitals for treatment, including a more serious case referred to the Hospital of Matucana and others to the Casapalca clinic. The National Police of Peru assisted in the transport of patients.

Emergency responders described an immediate triage upon arrival, prioritizing evacuation based on the severity of injuries. Victims were stabilized on site before being moved to local health centers.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. Local reports suggest foggy conditions in the area may have been a contributing factor. It remains unclear whether any foreign nationals were among the passengers.

Rajuntay mountain is a popular destination for adventure seekers, requiring previous trekking experience for those attempting to reach the peak. Tours typically depart from Lima on Saturday nights and return on Sunday.
