Kirchner Mayor’s Underwater Campaign Video Sparks Outrage from Argentine Agricultural Sector
Pehuajó, Buenos Aires Province – A campaign video featuring Pablo Zurro, the Peronist mayor of Pehuajó, diving underwater has ignited controversy, drawing sharp criticism from agricultural representatives who accuse him of insensitivity to the ongoing struggles of local producers. The video, posted online, shows Zurro scuba diving,a move critics say trivializes the severe challenges faced by farmers in the region.
Ignacio Kovarsky, President of the Confederation of Rural Associations of Buenos Aires (CARBAP), condemned the video as “a mockery,” stating, “It is indeed a mockery of the type that is shown as fishing under water, while the producers are trying to survive in the Pehuajó fields.” Kovarsky further explained that Zurro has refused to convene the local emergency commission, a necessary step for producers to access regional and national emergency assistance. Producers have been requesting agricultural emergency aid since march, but, according to Kovarsky, “The municipality does not want to give the option for producers to register in the emergency.”
The video has also generated significant reactions on social media, with users expressing both support and criticism. Some defended the mayor’s unconventional campaign approach, while others accused him of being out of touch with the realities of rural life. Comments ranged from sarcastic remarks about recent flooding to direct accusations of incompetence.
Zurro’s victory in the Fourth Electoral section, which includes Pehuajó, saw Peronism secure 40.34% of the vote, surpassing the Juntos por el Cambio coalition.Diego Sastre, a close associate of Zurro, represents the Camorista Force within the region.
