Paul McCartney’s Patek Philippe Aquanaut: The Beatle’s Coolest Accessory

March 21, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Sir Paul McCartney was spotted wearing a Patek Philippe Aquanaut at his daughter Stella McCartney’s fashion indicate in Paris earlier this month, continuing a decades-long association with the understated luxury timepiece.

The Aquanaut, released in 1997, has develop into a signature piece for the former Beatle, appearing in photographs from appearances on Carpool Karaoke, Rolling Stone cover shoots, and even his wedding. It represents a departure from the more ostentatious displays of wealth often associated with high-end watches, a quality that aligns with McCartney’s famously low-key style.

Unlike its sister model, the Nautilus – also designed by Gérald Genta – the Aquanaut forgoes the integrated bracelet typically found on luxury sports watches. Instead, it features an embossed rubber strap, a design choice that lends a sportier aesthetic while maintaining a sense of sophistication. This rubber strap was a first for Patek Philippe.

The Aquanaut was conceived as a “young person’s luxury watch,” offering a more modern alternative to Patek Philippe’s traditionally classic designs. Its eight-sided bezel and satin-brushed case, hallmarks of Genta’s aesthetic, contribute to its distinctive look. The watch’s design references 1970s aesthetics, setting it apart from earlier Patek Philippe models.

McCartney’s choice of the Aquanaut is notable given the watch’s appeal to a specific demographic. The timepiece has also been favored by financier George Soros, suggesting a preference among those seeking luxury without overt display. The Aquanaut’s versatility allows it to be worn in a variety of settings, from casual outings to formal events.

The watch’s current list price is approximately £16,670, according to watch retailers. In October 2023, McCartney was also seen wearing the Aquanaut before a concert in Australia, pairing it with a hoodie and jeans during a fan Q&A session.

John Lennon, McCartney’s bandmate, was also a noted watch collector, owning a Patek Philippe ref 2499 that sold at auction for $3,915,000. Ringo Starr has also been seen wearing the Aquanaut.
