Paul McCartney Raised Casting Concerns With Sam Mendes
Musician Paul McCartney raised objections over the casting of actor Paul Mescal in Sam Mendes’ upcoming four biographical films about the Beatles, specifically citing a height difference involving the actor chosen to portray John Lennon.
Casting Height Discrepancies and Abbey Road Recreations
Appearing as a guest on the podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, McCartney recounted contacting director Sam Mendes to voice his concerns regarding the physical stature of the actors cast as the members of the band. McCartney noted a particular height gap involving Paul Mescal, who was cast to portray him. According to data circulating online, a two-to-three centimeter gap exists between the actors. McCartney explained that the Fab Four were roughly equal in height, with only Ringo Starr standing slightly shorter.
In response to the feedback, director Sam Mendes sent McCartney a photograph of the actors recreating the iconic Abbey Road crosswalk scene. Upon inspecting the image, McCartney observed that the actor playing Lennon appeared taller than Mescal. “Sam! Shorter! Don’t do it, you said you wouldn’t do it,” McCartney reportedly messaged the director. Mendes explained that the perceived difference was a result of the actors’ strides, subsequently sending a second photograph showing them at equal heights, which temporarily resolved the issue according to the reported podcast interview.
McCartney Criticizes Nowhere Boy for Inaccurate Dynamics
The concerns raised by McCartney mirror previous tensions regarding cinematic representations of his early life. During the podcast appearance, McCartney recalled the 2009 film Nowhere Boy, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, which focused on John Lennon’s adolescent years. McCartney pointed out that the 2009 project lacked fidelity to reality, particularly in its portrayal of the dynamic between Lennon and McCartney, where the leader of the Beatles was depicted as a dominant figure while McCartney was placed in a more fragile position.

Coverage corroborated the details of the podcast recording regarding the Abbey Road photographic exchange and the historical comparisons to Nowhere Boy.
