Frida: Bringing the Voice of Frida Kahlo to Life at Sundance
Premiering on January 18, 2024, at the Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Documentary Competition, the documentary film Frida re-examines the life and art of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo through her own words, letters, and illustrated diary entries, sundance.org reported.
Director Carla Gutiérrez Uncovers Kahlo’s Direct Voice
Sundance Institute alum Carla Gutiérrez directed the project after a colleague suggested making a film about the renowned artist. Gutiérrez stated in her post-premiere Q&A session that she returned to books she read 20 years ago and quickly realized the wealth of personal material available. According to sundance.org, the production team initially expected to rely heavily on outside perspectives. Instead, Gutiérrez noted that Kahlo’s writings consistently pushed other voices away, letting the painter tell her own story.
The film opens with a direct premise noting that Kahlo left a rich testimony of life through letters, writings, and her illustrated diary. These primary texts guide the narrative as the documentary explores her independent thinking, her art, and her recovery following a severe bus crash that left her bedbound for months. Painting became her primary vessel for self-expression during her long hospital recovery, where she painted herself out of familiarity and vowed never to paint for glory.
Exploring Relationships and Lifelong Pain in Vivid Color
Beyond her artistic output, Frida examines the painter’s relationships in vivid color. The documentary details her rebellious adventures with young men, her expansive sexual life, and her tender yet tumultuous relationship with famed mural artist Diego Rivera. It also highlights her candid, profanity-laced remarks regarding wealthy individuals who spoke nonsense and failed to purchase her artwork.
Throughout her life, the physical pain resulting from her accident persisted, balanced by the sustaining pleasure she found in her work. As Kahlo noted in her personal writings featured in the film, stains of color came to life and helped her survive.
