Paul Goldsmith Rules Out Epsom Switch and Commits to 2026 Campaign
Goldsmith Clears Up Epsom Future
National Party MP Paul Goldsmith has ruled out a potential shift from his Epsom electorate to contest the Kaipara ki Mahurangi seat. He confirmed the decision in a video update shared to Facebook, cutting short rumors that he would abandon his constituency for the 2026 election.
The Genesis of Electoral Speculation
Whispers of a possible move first surfaced during a media panel appearance alongside Labour’s Willie Jackson. Jackson suggested that National might shift Goldsmith to fill a vacancy in the electorate, formerly known as Helensville. The logic pointed to current polling, which indicates the National Party may bring in a limited number of list MPs. For candidates looking to insulate themselves from party list vulnerabilities, a constituency win remains crucial.
Weighing Up a Fifteen-Year Base
Goldsmith initially acknowledged he was considering the switch and would make a decision within days, noting he would most likely stay put. In his subsequent video update, he admitted he had inadvertently fueled the rumors before locking in his commitment to Epsom.
“It is a beautiful seat. But I am standing in Epsom. It’s my home. I’ve campaigned there for 15 years,” Goldsmith said. He has contested Epsom in every election since 2011, even though the seat is solidly held by ACT leader David Seymour.
Cabinet Reshuffle Follows Caucus Turmoil
The political maneuvering comes on the heels of a turbulent week for the National Party. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was forced to call an emergency caucus meeting after a leadership challenge materialized within the ranks. Chris Penk was subsequently stripped of all his ministerial portfolios after outing himself as the instigator of the challenge, leading to his announcement that he will not seek re-election.

Absorbing Penk’s Former Portfolios
In the ensuing Cabinet reshuffle, Goldsmith absorbed several of Penk’s former portfolios on top of his existing ministerial responsibilities. His expanded remit now covers Defence, Veterans, Space, GCSB, and NZSIS.
