Stewart Dies After Battle with Dementia
According to a statement posted to the actor’s social media, Stewart died while in the loving care of his wife, Sunny, following a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Neither diagnosis had previously been disclosed to the public.
The statement detailed his final moments: “He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all.”
From the Royal Shakespeare Company to Science Fiction Iconography
Before achieving global fame in science fiction, Stewart built a distinguished stage career that included more than a decade with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His early film credits included playing the knight Leondegrance in the 1981 film Excalibur and warrior Gurney Halleck in David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation of Dune.
In the late 1980s, Stewart was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard for Star Trek: The Next Generation. Franchise creator Gene Roddenberry initially opposed the casting during a tense initial meeting, but Stewart told USA TODAY in 2023 that Roddenberry eventually stepped aside. Stewart portrayed Picard across all seven seasons from 1987 to 1994, turning catchphrases like “Make it so” into cultural staples.

Later in his career, Stewart expanded his cinematic footprint by portraying the telepathic mutant leader Professor Charles Xavier across the X-Men film series starting in 2000, reprising the role in films such as Logan (2017) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Beyond dramatic and sci-fi roles, he also voiced the Poop emoji in the 2017 animated film The Emoji Movie.
Stewart was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010. He was also a motor sport enthusiast and a lifelong Huddersfield Football fan.
