His death was attributed to old age, with no further details provided.
Born in Chicago and raised in Manhattan as the child of Lithuanian immigrants, Koenig launched his professional acting career in 1962 with an uncredited role as a sentry in the television series Combat!. He joined the cast of Star Trek at the start of its second season, appearing in 36 of the 50 episodes that aired between 1967 and 1969. He subsequently reprised his role as the Russian Chekov in the first seven feature films produced by Paramount Pictures between 1979 and 1991, and later made a cameo appearance voicing Anton Chekov, the son of his original character, in a 2023 episode of Star Trek: Picard.
Decades of Friendship and Tributes
George Takei, who starred alongside Koenig as Hikaru Sulu, posted a tribute on Facebook reflecting on their friendship. Takei noted that they met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and Koenig later served as his best man when he married Brad Altman in 2008.
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.
Jesse Thorn, host of the NPR show Bullseye, also confirmed the passing on Bluesky after speaking with the actor’s daughter, Danielle Koenig. Thorn noted the deep personal bonds shared among the cast members.
Koenig Wrote for Television and Published a Memoir
Beyond his work on Star Trek, Koenig built a career as a writer, penning episodes for television series including The Powers of Matthew Star, Family, Land of the Lost, and The Incredible Hulk. He also wrote, produced, and starred in the 2010 science fiction film InAlienable.

Koenig starred as Alfred Bester in the science fiction series Babylon 5, which ran from 1994 to 1998, and published his memoir, Warped Factors: A Neurotic’s Guide to the Universe, in 1998. His other television credits included roles in The Virginian, Columbo, and Futurama.
Koenig was married to actor Judy Levitt from 1965 until her death in December 2022 at the age of 83. The couple appeared together in three Star Trek films and in Babylon 5. Their son, Andrew Koenig, known for his role in the sitcom Growing Pains, died in 2010 at age 41. He is survived by his daughter, the actor and screenwriter Danielle Koenig.
