Kieran Tierney looks dejected

Pat Bonner Says Celtic Not Good Enough for Eighth-Placed La Liga Side

October 23, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Celtic fell short against Celta, leaving former goalkeeper Pat Bonner to question whether the squad possesses the required quality for European competition, bbc.co.uk reported.

Celtic fail to secure control after the break

Centre-back Liam Scales recorded 121 touches during the match, leading all Celtic players ahead of left-back Kieran Tierney with 79 touches and goalkeeper Sam Johnstone with 69 touches. Goalscorer Baur acknowledged that the team failed to do enough to secure the win and expressed uncertainty regarding what adjustments are necessary.

How we played second half, last 30 minutes, we deserved it in the end, Baur said.

When asked if he knew why his team collapsed in such a manner, he responded: I cannot tell you, sorry.

Baur noted that opponents can score and that teams must respond by regaining control and holding the ball longer to neutralize momentum. Celtic failed to execute that tactical reset against the eighth-placed La Liga side.

Pat Bonner doubts Celtic squad can compete in Europe

I don’t think Celtic are good enough, individually and collectively, to take on a team that’s eighth in La Liga, Pat Bonner said on Sportsound, as reported by bbc.co.uk. They moved the ball really well and Celtic couldn’t get close to them.

Bonner added that the club faces pressure from supporters to invest heavily in new signings, which has led to high transfer fees for players who ultimately struggle to perform at this level.

Celtic will host Besiktas on 5 November in their next European fixture as they attempt to correct their continental form.
