Europe Remembers the Paris Attacks Ten Years On
Today marks a decade since the horrific terrorist attacks that struck Paris on November 13, 2015, claiming the lives of 132 people and leaving hundreds injured. Across France and the European Union, ceremonies are being held to commemorate the victims and honor the survivors.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen issued a statement recognizing the profound loss and condemning the attacks as a direct assault on core European values. She described the events as “an attack on our values – freedom, peace and tolerance,” and emphasized the enduring importance of these ideals to both France and the EU.
The European Union has prioritized combating terrorism and safeguarding its citizens. Member states collaborate closely to prevent and counter both terrorism and violent extremism. This year, the Commission unveiled “ProtectEU,” a new internal security strategy designed to enhance the EU’s capacity to foresee threats, address radicalization, and protect public areas. The strategy also aims to improve coordinated responses in the event of future attacks.
As Europe reflects on this somber anniversary, it also acknowledges the strength and solidarity demonstrated in the wake of the tragedy. Paris, ten years later, serves as a powerful symbol of a Europe resolute in its defense of freedom, peace, and tolerance against those who attempt to sow division.
