Parents face barriers to vaccinating children, says report

Vaccine Access Barriers Stalling Childhood Immunization

Falling childhood vaccination rates in the UK are raising alarms. Difficulties in securing appointments and a lack of timely reminders are primary reasons for this concerning trend, leading to preventable disease outbreaks.

Accessibility Issues Hampering Vaccination Efforts

A recent report indicates that practical hurdles are frequently preventing parents from vaccinating their children. These challenges are more common than hesitancy about the vaccines themselves. Uptake has been declining over the last decade, contributing to outbreaks of illnesses like measles and whooping cough.

“One of the findings of this new report is that parents have no easy way to check their child’s vaccination status,”

Dr. Helen Stewart, Officer for Health Improvement at RCPCH

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 95% vaccination coverage is necessary to prevent outbreaks, a goal the UK has not met for any childhood vaccine since 2022. In the United States, for example, vaccination coverage for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine among children aged 19–35 months was 91.9% in 2022 (CDC 2023).

Identifying the Roadblocks

The report, compiled by experts from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), investigated the reasons for the decline. The findings revealed that vaccine hesitancy is only one aspect of the problem. Many families encounter difficulties such as booking appointments, taking time off work, and transportation issues, among other barriers.

The report suggests several improvements to boost vaccination rates, including utilizing NHS apps to streamline appointment scheduling, expanding vaccination services, and supporting health visitors in delivering vaccinations. The NHS website also provides a comprehensive schedule of vaccinations for children. Authorities are working to make vaccinations more accessible and convenient for all communities.
