Paralives Developer Interview: Drawing Inspiration From Hades and Disco Elysium

July 19, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

The development team behind Paralives, an upcoming life-simulation game, is drawing inspiration from titles outside the genre, including Hades and Disco Elysium. According to developer interviews, the team is looking to integrate narrative depth and stylistic elements from these successes into the core experience of Paralives to distinguish it from traditional life-simulation titles.

Integrating Narrative and Design Concepts

While Paralives occupies the life-simulation space, its creators are actively looking at how other genres handle player agency and storytelling. In recent discussions regarding the game’s evolution, the development team highlighted that titles like the roguelike Hades and the role-playing game Disco Elysium have provided unexpected structural references.

The influence from these games is not necessarily about gameplay mechanics, but rather how they manage player interaction with the world and characters. By examining the narrative density found in Disco Elysium and the progression loops in Hades, the Paralives team aims to create a more dynamic environment where player choices carry weight. This approach marks a shift from conventional life simulators, which often rely on open-ended gameplay loops rather than scripted narrative progression.

Development Status and Features

Paralives is being developed by an independent team led by Alex Massé. The project, which has been in development for several years, focuses on providing players with extensive customization tools for both characters, known as "Parafolk," and their living spaces.

The Story of Alex Massé & The Paralives Team

A primary pillar of the project remains the "Paralives engine," a proprietary suite of tools designed to allow for flexible building and character editing. The team has consistently emphasized that the game’s architecture is built to support user-generated content and modding, which they view as essential to the longevity of the life-simulation genre. Despite the high level of community interest, the team has maintained a cautious approach to development, prioritizing the stability of their custom tools over aggressive release targets.

Industry Context

The life-simulation genre is currently seeing a period of renewed competition. Following years of limited variety in the space, several independent studios have announced projects intended to challenge the dominance of established franchises. Paralives distinguishes its market position by focusing on the "indie" nature of its development, emphasizing transparency with its community throughout the build process.

The developers continue to work on the game’s internal systems, with no official release date currently scheduled. The project remains in active development as the team refines the core loops of the simulation.
