Papua New Guinea faces Lebanon in Rugby League World Cup opener
Papua New Guinea launches its Rugby League World Cup campaign on home soil against Lebanon in Port Moresby, stepping into a tournament shortened to ten teams while missing several key players due to injury.
The fixture at home brings intense national expectations for the Papua New Guinea Kumuls. Rugby league holds a rare position of total devotion across the island, tracing roots back to Australian miners in the 1930s. Informal matches are played everywhere on scraps of grass, gravel, or cleared land using improvised balls when official equipment is unavailable.
Squad Depletion and Training Conditions
The Kumuls enter the tournament opener on October 17 with a heavily-depleted squad. Hamstring and wrist injuries sidelined notable players including Cooper Bai, Lachlan Lam, Alex Johnston, and Xavier Coates.
The side relies on a mix of local talent alongside experienced players from the National Rugby League and the English Super League, directed by captain Rhyse Martin and veteran forward Jack de Belin. Training sessions in Port Moresby this week involved temperatures reaching 29 degrees Celsius. De Belin pointed out that the local heat, humidity, and wind present unfamiliar challenges for visiting teams, noting that Lebanon faces these conditions for the first time.
Lebanon Faces Kumuls in First International Meeting
Lebanon arrives with a squad featuring NRL experience, including Jacob Kiraz, Tony Francis, Jordan Samrani, and Jason Saab. The two nations have never met in an international game, and Lebanon holds a record of one win, one draw, and six losses against Pacific nations outside of Australia and New Zealand.

The women’s tournament features the Papua New Guinea Orchids playing France as a curtain-raiser on Saturday ahead of the men’s fixture. Following the opening match against Lebanon, the Kumuls host Samoa on October 24, before traveling to Wollongong, Australia, to face England.
