Rob Toia Snubs Kangaroos to Pledge World Cup Allegiance to Tonga
Rob Toia has chosen to represent Tonga for the Rugby League World Cup, declining an opportunity to play for Australia in the tournament later this month. The decision by the boom centre follows Sunday night’s NRL grand final, where Toia told AAP he will be available for Kristian Woolf’s pacific nation side.
While Toia would have been a strong chance to play for Australia, Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters will now need to look elsewhere for his centres. Explaining his choice to the publication, Toia said:
“I just thought of missing out on being a part of a special team, and (Tonga) has what it takes to win the World Cup. I’d be stupid to not want to be a part of it.”
Players Confirm International Allegiances Following Roster Moves
Toia’s announcement follows a busy weekend of roster moves across the league. Fellow grand final centre Dane Gagai also switched his allegiance from Australia to New Zealand over the weekend, though he would have been a surprise selection in Walters’ squad.

Meanwhile, the Kangaroos received mixed news regarding other player commitments. Tino Fa’asuamaleaui pledged his international allegiance to Australia, confirming to Code Sports that he will run out for the green and gold. However, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow committed to Samoa, following in the footsteps of Payne Haas.
Walters Decides on Replacement Halfback for Nathan Cleary
Walters is set to unveil his Kangaroos squad at 11am on Monday, alongside the announcement of Australia’s women’s team for the tournament, which runs concurrently.
The Australian coach faces a major decision in selecting a replacement halfback for Nathan Cleary following the Penrith superstar’s leg injury. Contenders include Roosters grand final winners Sam Walker and Daly Cherry-Evans, alongside Eels halfback Mitchell Moses. The Rugby League World Cup is scheduled to kick off on October 15 when Australia plays New Zealand in Sydney.
