Palestinian-American Returns to West Bank to Defend Home Under Settler Siege

August 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Palestinian-American Loui Ridi traveled to his home in the village of Qusra in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Monday to join family members defending the property after it was encircled by militant settlers for more than a week.

Arrival in Qusra Amid an Ongoing Settler Standoff

Loui Ridi landed at Israel’s main international airport and traveled directly to Qusra, according to reporting by Sam Metz and Majdi Mohammed of the Associated Press. As he arrived, video footage captured by his brother showed settlers continuing to roam near the village, driving all-terrain vehicles and interacting with deployed military units. Ridi told reporters at the airport that he felt terrified for the safety of his brother and teenage nephew, who had remained inside the house to protect it, while noting that he now feared for his own safety as well.

The Israeli military deployed troops to the area to maintain order. However, footage reviewed from the scene showed soldiers interacting amicably with settlers rather than executing arrests. Upon reaching the property on the village’s outskirts, Ridi stepped out of his car carrying an American flag while settlers remained visible via security cameras.

Broader Patterns of West Bank Violence and Humanitarian Impact

The siege of Ridi’s home unfolds against a backdrop of soaring violence across the occupied West Bank. According to Palestinian health officials, Israeli soldiers and settlers have killed 87 Palestinians so far this year, while Palestinians have killed three Israelis, including two individuals killed in the West Bank village of Tell. Independent documentation from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) records at least 1,143 settler attacks against Palestinians between October 7 and August 5 alone. OCHA data indicates that at least 114 of those incidents led directly to Palestinian fatalities and injuries.

Political Pressures and Government Response

Far-right ministers within Israel’s governing coalition have faced sharp domestic and international criticism for instigating settler actions. During the aftermath of the Jit assault, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issued a statement warning that those responsible for any offense would be apprehended and tried. Meanwhile, leaders such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich publicly categorized the attackers as criminals unrelated to broader settlement movements, even as local communities point to government rhetoric as an emboldening factor.

The persistent encirclement of residential properties in Qusra underscores a deepening crisis of civilian safety and property defense in the West Bank.
