Zelenskyy Rejects Wartime Elections and Addresses Rift With Fired Minister

August 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that holding a national election during wartime would risk destroying the country, directly rejecting calls for a vote as the nation maintains martial law.

Electoral Constraints and Constitutional Framework

Under Ukraine’s current legal framework, holding parliamentary or presidential elections is prohibited while martial law remains in effect. Zelenskyy emphasized that pushing for a vote under ongoing Russian bombardments would fracture domestic stability and undermine the nation’s defense efforts, according to statements detailed by The Guardian and The New York Times. The Ukrainian leader maintained that public focus must remain entirely on countering the invasion rather than engaging in political campaigns.

Controversy Over Ministerial Dismissal

The debate intensified following remarks from former Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, who had publicly called for the scheduling of wartime elections. According to the BBC and ABC News, Zelenskyy addressed the rift during media briefings, asserting that Reznikov was wrong to demand a vote and noting that some of the former minister’s actions had become misguided before his departure from the post. Reznikov was subsequently asked by the BBC to clarify what he knew regarding broader government corruption allegations that had surfaced during his tenure.

Institutional Response and Foreign Pressure

However, according to the Financial Times, Zelenskyy’s administration remains firm that any attempt to organize nationwide polling amid active hostilities would create profound logistical vulnerabilities and security hazards. The Ukrainian government has not announced any timeline for revisiting electoral preparations, leaving the current suspension of voting under martial law fully intact.
