Pakistan Warns Iran to Rein In Houthis Amid Saudi Strikes and New Defense Pact
On September 9, Pakistan delivered a Saudi warning to Iran, demanding that Tehran rein in its Yemeni Houthi allies following heavy drone and missile strikes on Saudi territory. According to Saudi, Pakistani, and Iranian sources cited by Reuters, the coordinated diplomatic intervention aims to prevent a widening regional war as energy infrastructure comes under fire.
The Escalation Across Gulf Energy Infrastructure
The latest crisis erupted on Tuesday when Houthi forces struck an airbase in Khamis Mushait and targeted oil infrastructure in nearby cities. According to Reuters reporting, the assault wounded 73 people, marking one of the largest direct attacks on Saudi Arabia since the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran began in February.
In retaliation, Saudi warplanes carried out 54 airstrikes across multiple Yemeni provinces over a 12-hour window. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree stated on Wednesday that these military actions would face severe consequences.
This localized escalation forms a dangerous secondary theater of war threatening global energy supplies. The strikes coincide with intensifying tit-for-tat naval confrontations between the United States and Iran in the Gulf region.
Pakistan Intervenes via Trilateral Defense Framework
Pakistan’s diplomatic pressure carries substantial weight due to its formal defense arrangements with Saudi Arabia and Turkey. While Islamabad maintains a policy of confining any military role strictly to the defense of Saudi sovereign territory, officials have made the threshold for intervention explicit.
Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated in a televised broadcast that any unprovoked aggression spilling into the kingdom would operationalize a joint security pact linking Riyadh, Ankara, and Islamabad. “An aggression on one country will be considered an aggression on all three countries,” Asif said, according to Reuters.
Regional diplomats note that Islamabad is actively pursuing a diplomatic resolution to keep Riyadh from pressing Pakistan into a direct military posture. Concurrently, Saudi military representatives have met with Pakistani and Turkish counterparts in Riyadh to coordinate defense strategy, agreeing that allied troops will operate exclusively from Saudi territory rather than entering Yemen.
Contrasting Positions in Tehran and Regional Fallout
The diplomatic messaging has met immediate friction in Iran. According to a senior Iranian official speaking to Reuters, Tehran responded to Islamabad’s warning by asserting that “Iran does not control the Houthis.”
However, that official stance contrasts sharply with intelligence gathered from two separate Iranian sources. Those sources reported that Tehran instructed the Houthis last week to accelerate attacks on Saudi Arabia, backed by promises of enhanced funding, advanced weaponry, and direct coordination from several Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders deployed to Yemen.
The ongoing regional instability and renewed Houthi aggression continue to weigh heavily on geopolitical stability assessments, driving market participants to re-evaluate internal pressures within Iran.
