Why Pakistan Tested an Extended Range Version of the Fatah-IV

Pakistan test-fires extended-range Fatah-IV cruise missile, ISPR says

October 13, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

On October 6, Pakistan test-fired an extended-range version of the Fatah-IV surface-to-surface cruise missile, according to an announcement by the Pakistan Armed Forces’ Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported by Janes. The latest trial follows a baseline launch conducted by the Pakistan Army’s Rocket Force Command in May 2026 and marks the third launch of the missile system since its August 2025 unveiling.

Military Leaders Praise Successful Missile Trial

The military’s public relations wing stated that the trial successfully validated the missile’s performance at extended distances while assessing upgraded subsystems designed to improve overall accuracy and battlefield survivability. Senior Pakistan army officers, scientists, and engineers observed the launch. President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Field Marshal Asim Munir—who serves as Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces—joined service chiefs in praising the successful test.

While official military statements did not disclose the precise maximum distance of the newly tested variant, available imagery indicates the extended-range Fatah-IV could have a range of around 1,000 kilometers. This exceeds the baseline model’s reported range of 750 kilometers.

Fatah-IV Uses Terrain-Hugging Flight to Evade Radar

The baseline Fatah-IV is a conventional cruise missile engineered for precision land-attack missions, utilizing advanced avionics and navigational aids. Official displays from its August 2025 introduction outline a weapon length of 7.5 meters, a weight of 1,530 kilograms, and a maximum speed of Mach 0.7. It carries a 330-kilogram blast-fragmentation conventional warhead.

To evade radar detection and penetrate air defense shields, the missile relies on a terrain-hugging flight profile. Operating at an altitude of approximately 50 meters, the missile hugs local topography to minimize radar detection. The extended-range variant incorporates design modifications including wings positioned on the underbelly and a slightly larger body to store more fuel.

Strategic Rationales Behind the Extended-Range Testing

The development of the extended-range Fatah-IV addresses specific military planning challenges following regional clashes in 2025. The weapon counters the Indian Air Force’s strategy of operating from rear bases and utilizing standoff munitions, such as the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. By extending its reach past 750 kilometers, the missile provides Pakistan’s conventional strike force the ability to target military infrastructure and air assets deployed deep within mainland India.

The system's introduction brings key central and southern Indian commercial hubs, including Mumbai, within range of conventional counter-value targeting. This capability is intended to strengthen conventional deterrence and dissuade pre-emptive strikes.

Unanswered Questions Regarding Maximum Operational Range

Despite the official confirmation of the test and the validation of enhanced technical parameters, several key operational details remain undisclosed by military authorities. The ISPR statement did not specify the exact test location, nor did it publish precise figures for the new variant’s maximum range, specific fuel payload, or propulsion system.
