European Union fossil fuel payments to Russia reach 197 billion euros

Kopš Krievijas pilna mēroga iebrukuma Ukrainā Eiropas Savienība ir samaksājusi aptuveni 197 miljardus eiro jeb 209 miljardus ASV dolāru par fosilajiem energoresursiem, ziņo Ukrainas medijs NV, atsaucoties uz “Jeuropeiska pravda” informāciju. This financial total accumulated between March 2022 and July 2026, according to figures from the Ukrainian media outlet NV, which cited data from the publication “Jeuropeiska pravda” alongside official European Union statistics.

These figures diverge from previous statements made by US President Donald Trump, who asserted that the European Union spent 250 miljardus ASV dolāru on Russian energy during the same timeframe. European institutional estimates indicate that without the implementation of the REPowerEU plan—designed to phase out reliance on Russian energy—EU disbursements to Moscow would have reached approximately 475 miljardus eiro. According to a source cited in the reporting, reducing fossil fuel dependence on Russia has allowed the bloc to avoid roughly 278 miljardu eiro in additional expenditures. By 2023, Russian shipments accounted for only about 6 percent of total European Union expenditures on fossil fuels.

US diesel imports from Russia draw congressional criticism

Donald Trump announced he spoke with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and reached an agreement concerning Russian diesel shipments to the United States and global markets. Seven US senators from both the Republican and Democratic parties responded by declaring that the Trump administration’s decision to permit Russian diesel imports violates US law, urging the president to reverse the decision immediately. Lawmakers pointed out that the US Congress banned imports of Russian energy in 2022 to prevent American funds from financing the war against Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the prospective diesel volumes, stating they involve 300,000 to 500,000 tons per month against a global consumption level of 120 miljonus tonnu mēnesī. Zelenskyy questioned the absence of a comparable US agreement to secure diesel imports from Ukraine, noting such an arrangement could be tied to guarantees protecting Ukrainian energy infrastructure from Russian strikes.

Trump claims energy ceasefire as Ukraine denies plan

Trump stated that an energy ceasefire has commenced between Ukraine and Russia following mutual agreement from both sides to halt strikes on national oil refineries. Ukraine maintains a single oil refinery that operates below capacity and has suffered repeated damage from Russian attacks, whereas Russia possesses an extensive network of refineries. If these strikes halt, subsequent discussions could address ending attacks on power plants and electrical grids.

The Financial Times previously reported, citing a Ukrainian government source, that Kyiv does not intend to halt strikes on Russian oil infrastructure despite the arrangement regarding diesel shipments to the US. The Trump administration warned Ukraine and European allies that Washington could suspend intelligence sharing and cut off European procurement of US weapons for Ukraine if Kyiv continues targeting deep Russian energy assets.

Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine supports an energy ceasefire, but noted that Russia continues its assaults on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. He added that he has heard no confirmation of Russian agreement to the ceasefire, expressing hope that Trump will persuade Putin to support the initiative. The Kremlin stated that contacts regarding the energy ceasefire are ongoing, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Russia will not grant Ukraine any battlefield respite.

Zelenskyy later reported that following Trump’s announcement of the energy ceasefire, Ukraine refrained from executing strikes on targets inside Russian territory, whereas Russia persisted in its assaults against Ukraine.
