Pakistan: Suicide Bombing Kills 12 Soldiers & Child in Taliban Stronghold

February 17, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

A suicide bomber, supported by gunmen, detonated an explosives-laden vehicle against a security post in a former Pakistani Taliban stronghold in northwestern Pakistan on Monday night, killing 11 soldiers and a young girl, officials said Tuesday.

The attack unfolded in Bajaur district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a region bordering Afghanistan, according to a statement released by the Pakistani military. Troops signaled for the vehicle to halt, prompting the bomber to ram the wall of the post, causing a partial collapse. Following the explosion, a group of militants attempted to infiltrate the post, triggering a firefight in which 12 militants were killed, local police official Zafar Khan stated.

The military identified the slain militants as “khawarij,” a term used by authorities to refer to the Pakistani Taliban, likewise known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Seven civilians, including women and children, were also wounded in the blast and subsequent damage to nearby homes, the military reported.

The TTP claimed responsibility for the attack, according to reports. The group has been waging a conflict against the Pakistani state since 2007, seeking to impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law. The TTP had previously observed a ceasefire with Islamabad, but revoked it in late 2022, leading to a resurgence in attacks.

Tensions in Bajaur have been elevated since August 2025, when Pakistani security forces initiated a “targeted operation” against militants in the area. The operation resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of residents, who have since returned home, with intelligence-based operations continuing in the region.

The attack comes amid a broader increase in violence in Pakistan. Earlier this month, a bombing at a mosque in Islamabad killed over 30 people during Friday prayers. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for that attack, raising concerns about a potential resurgence of militancy from multiple fronts within the country.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan of providing safe haven to the TTP, allegations that the Taliban government in Kabul has consistently denied. The issue of cross-border militancy remains a significant point of contention between the two nations.
