Paid Parental Leave Rate to Rise in July

June 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The maximum weekly rate for government-funded parental leave in New Zealand will increase to $753.08 per week, before tax, starting July 1, 2024. This adjustment represents an increase of $41.34 from the current rate of $711.78, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Adjustment Calculations

The annual increase is tied to the movement in average ordinary time weekly earnings, as measured by Statistics New Zealand. Under the Parental Leave and Employment Protection Act 1987, the government is required to adjust the maximum payment rate each year to reflect changes in the labor market. The new rate applies to employees and self-employed individuals who meet the eligibility criteria for the Paid Parental Leave scheme.

Eligibility and Payment Structure

Eligibility and Payment Structure

To qualify for the payments, a primary carer must have worked for at least 10 hours a week for any 26 of the 52 weeks preceding the expected birth or adoption of a child. The payments are designed to replace a portion of the recipient’s income while they are on leave from their employment.

For those currently receiving payments, the increase will be applied automatically from the first pay period on or after July 1. Recipients do not need to submit new applications to receive the adjusted amount.

Employer Obligations and Future Reviews

While the government covers the cost of the parental leave payments, employers are responsible for managing leave requests in accordance with the Parental Leave and Employment Protection Act. The legislation ensures that employees can take up to 26 weeks of paid leave, provided they meet the work-test requirements.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment confirmed that the rate will remain in effect until the next scheduled adjustment in July 2025. The government has not yet released the specific criteria or projections for the 2025 adjustment, leaving the future rate subject to subsequent labor market data and official review.
