Orlando Pirates suffered their first league defeat since August, ending a 14-match unbeaten streak, as they lost 2-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening. The result saw the Buccaneers lose only their second home game of the season and their third league match overall.
Despite the defeat, Orlando Pirates remain at the top of the Betway Premiership table, though Mamelodi Sundowns have closed the gap to just three points. The match, a highly anticipated clash between the league’s top two sides, began with a nervous energy and uncharacteristic errors from both teams.
The early stages of the game saw Orlando Pirates create several opportunities. In the 6th minute, a misplaced pass inside the penalty area nearly resulted in an own goal for Sundowns, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a remarkable save to prevent Deon Hotto’s deflected shot from finding the back of the net. Pirates continued to press, with Yanela Mbuthuma forcing another save from Williams in the 15th minute following a cross from Oswin Appollis.
However, the hosts were unable to capitalize on their early dominance. Mamelodi Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with a swift counter-attack, finished by Brayan León. Four minutes later, León doubled the visitors’ lead, scoring his second goal of the evening.
Pirates responded quickly after halftime, with Mbuthuma hitting the woodwork shortly after the restart. From the resulting play, Patrick Maswanganyi’s long-range shot took a deflection, wrong-footing Williams and reducing the deficit for the home side.
The Buccaneers then launched a sustained attack, but neither Hotto nor Masindi Nemtajela could generate enough power to trouble Williams. At the other end, Sipho Chaine, the Pirates goalkeeper, was called upon to deny Teboho Mokoena’s powerful long-range effort. The woodwork again intervened for Pirates, as Khulumani Ndamane headed a corner against the crossbar.
The game concluded with a stop-start rhythm, favoring Sundowns as they effectively managed the clock. Despite their efforts, Orlando Pirates were unable to find an equalizer. The match was played under the novel MyTicket digital ticketing platform, launched to improve stadium access and convenience, with Season Ticket holders entering through Gate C.
Traffic management around FNB Stadium was strict, with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) implementing road closures. Gates opened at 3:30 PM, with peak traffic control beginning at 2:00 PM. Kamu Dee headlined the pre-match entertainment, while Malemon performed at halftime. The Orlando Pirates Store was open, offering official club merchandise.
