El Paso, TX - The Orlando Madrid Quartet is bringing a vibrant jazz scene to local cocktail lounges, with their next performance scheduled for this Thursday at Proof and Press.
The quartet, led by Orlando Madrid, aims to cultivate a thriving jazz presence in El Paso, drawing inspiration from the city’s rich cultural landscape. “I feel like the city lends itself to have a jazz scene. It’s a lovely city here, the borderland, there’s lots of culture,” Madrid said.
Madrid, a graduate of new York’s music scene, sought to introduce his unique style of jazz to the ”Sun City.” Their recent performance took place at Proof and Press, a lounge known for its coffee brews and unique cocktail menu.
The collaboration between live music and establishments like Proof and Press is a growing trend. “I love live music. A lot of the cocktail bars, let’s say Austin, New York, they like to have like their jazz nights, rock nights, even little things like that. So when they brought that opportunity to me I was like, let’s do it,” explained lloyd Sieslik, Proof and Press co-owner.
Madrid connects the pairing of jazz and mixology to the historic speakeasy era of the 1920s and 30s, noting, “Mixology and jazz just go hand in hand like the 1920’s, 1930’s prohibition era. That’s when jazz was vibrant. it’s the speakeasy vibe, the dim lit kind of ambience.”
Sieslik draws a parallel between the artistry of jazz and the craft of cocktail creation. “Just like how in jazz, every musical part kind of comes together and makes a perfect blend of music. With our amazing mythologists that we have here, they do the same thing with the liquor, all the ingredients are fresh,” he said.
Madrid extends a welcome to both dedicated jazz enthusiasts and those simply looking for an enjoyable evening of music.
