Onehunga Shooting: Man Arrested, Shotgun Seized in Police Investigation

A 43-year-old man has been charged with firearm offences following a police investigation into a shooting in Auckland’s Onehunga suburb last month, authorities confirmed Monday.

The shooting occurred on Arthur Street around 11 a.m. On January 16, leaving one man critically injured after “several people” arrived and discharged firearms at a residential property, according to police. Detective Senior Sergeant Matt Bunce, at the time, described the incident as “targeted.”

On Monday, Bunce announced that a search warrant was executed at a property in Māngere last week, supported by the Armed Offenders Squad. During the search, officers recovered a shotgun and ammunition. “At this stage we are unable to confirm this firearm was involved in the original offending,” Bunce stated.

The 43-year-old man is now facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. He appeared in the Auckland District Court over the weekend, police said.

“We have no tolerance for blatant violence involving firearms in our community,” Bunce added. “We have a dedicated investigative team that is working to hold those involved to account for what happened that day.”

Police are continuing to appeal for information from the public. Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact police on 105, quoting reference number 260116/9278, or provide information anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
