Olympique de Marseille Women‘s Team Embraces New identity: “Les marseillaises”
Marseille, France - In a move signaling a important investment in its women’s football program, Olympique de Marseille (OM) officially rebranded its women’s team as “Les Marseillaises” at the start of the current season. This strategic decision, mirroring a similar initiative by Olympique Lyonnais with “OL Lyonnes,” aims to establish a distinct identity for the rapidly growing section of the club.
The renaming isn’t merely cosmetic.Players express a tangible sense of empowerment and recognition. “For us, it’s a real boost, it’s a real identity,” stated Ninon Blanchard, reflecting the team’s enthusiasm. “The club is putting a lot of things in place, we have a lot of recognition. We were presented at the Vélodrome. This shows that the project around women is being built and continues to grow.”
The commitment extends beyond a name change. Salomé Elisor, returning to OM after a previous stint in the 2016-2017 season (currently on loan from Le Havre), highlighted the tangible support. “The club wanted us to have a real identity, that we really represent something vital, so we are delighted,” Elisor explained. “We wear sweaters, we had pre-match outfits stamped ‘les Marseillaises’. We are vrey proud of it as it is indeed something that best represents us. It also shows the commitment and confidence the club has. It’s a way of valuing ourselves.”
This rebranding initiative underscores a broader trend within French women’s football, where clubs are increasingly investing in resources and recognition for their women’s teams. The presentation at the iconic Vélodrome stadium is a powerful symbol of this commitment, signaling a new era for women’s football at OM.
