Ohio Considers Major Amtrak Expansion, Citing Significant Economic Benefits
COLUMBUS, OH – A proposed expansion of Amtrak service in Ohio, specifically the growth of the 3C+D route, is projected to generate considerable economic benefits, according to a 2023 study commissioned by All Aboard Ohio. The study, conducted by the columbus-based public policy firm Scioto Analysis, estimates a one-time economic impact of $106 million, largely benefiting the construction industry. Furthermore, the new route is expected to yield an annual economic impact ranging from $25 million to $47 million.
“Yes,there is a cost to this,” stated Agrawal,a proponent of the investment,acknowledging the financial outlay while emphasizing the accompanying economic advantages. This initiative comes as Ohio continues to explore enhancements to it’s passenger rail infrastructure, drawing comparisons to triumphant Amtrak operations in neighboring states like Michigan. The discussion around Amtrak funding also includes differing viewpoints, with some federal officials, such as U.S.Sen. Bernie Moreno, advocating for a reduction in Amtrak’s federal funding.
