Uruguayan Theater Group Tackles Argentine History with Black Comedy “Oedipus in Ezeiza“
Montevideo,Uruguay – A Uruguayan creative group is bringing a darkly comedic take on a pivotal, yet largely unknown, moment in Argentine history to the stage with their new play, oedipus in Ezeiza. Premiering September 19th at El Galpón’s Zero Sala in Buenos Aires, the production explores the 1973 Ezeiza Massacre, a violent clash between Peronist factions that foreshadowed the contry’s descent into dictatorship.
The play, featuring actors Martina Ferreira, Mauricio Ripoll, and Tomás de Urquiza, utilizes the framework of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex to dissect the political infighting and societal fractures that led to the bloodshed at Ezeiza International Airport. Director Juan Larrocca describes the move from their self-managed space,”the burrow,” to El Galpón as “an immense jump in the vacuum,” signifying a bold step towards a wider audience and greater impact. The Ezeiza Massacre, occurring upon the return of exiled Peronist leader Juan Perón, left at least 12 peopel dead and dozens wounded. The event exposed deep divisions within the Peronist movement itself, between those aligned with conventional Peronism and the more radical factions. Oedipus in Ezeiza aims to shed light on this frequently enough-overlooked chapter of argentine history, prompting reflection on the cyclical nature of political violence and the dangers of ideological extremism.
“That the dramaturgy allows me to approach this stage of Argentine history…click[s] me,” Ferreira, Ripoll, and de Urquiza stated collectively. “We are so close we know so little. As for acting what we are living. We crossed as young people in Uruguay or as young people standing in this world.”
Performances of Oedipus in Ezeiza are scheduled for September 19th and 26th at 8:30 PM. Tickets are available for $600 through redtickets, with a 2×1 discount available exclusively to The Daily readers at https://beneficios.ladiaria.com.uy/edipo-en-ezeiza/.
