Family Ties and Early Life in Indianapolis

Born Tuesday, November 18, 1952, in Indianapolis, Kathleen was the daughter of the late Marion Clair “Smokey” and Nellie “Joyce” (Hopton) Burgess. She was a graduate of Brown County High School.

Family members described her as sweet-natured and patient, though she possessed a notable stubborn streak and a joyful laugh. She maintained an exceptionally close relationship with her mother, to the point where observers frequently mistook the two for sisters later in their lives.

She is survived by her son, Sean Mathis, and daughter-in-law, Krista. She is also survived by several cousins, including Debbie Hopton Lindley, Patricia Hopton Sorrell, Kim Hopton Card, Tracey Hopton-Williams, Chris Hopton, Ronnie Turner, and Lana Hendricks, as well as brothers-in-law Warren (Susan) Mathis, Dean (Amy) Mathis, and Byron Mathis.

Mathis was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Christian Mathis, her parents, and her uncles William (Bill) and Ronnie Hopton.

Personal Interests and Community Connections

Outside of her professional life, Mathis was a skilled crafter who loved to crochet. Her leisure time was often spent reading or using coloring apps on her phone. She was known for her love of Grimm and Colts games.

Her compassion extended to animals, a trait rooted in a childhood spent around dogs and cats. This affinity continued into her later years; she frequently sent Christmas gifts to her “grandcats.”

In her final years, she shared a home with her roommate, Helen, for whom she took good care. She also maintained a spiritual connection through her brother-in-law and friend, Byron, from whom she received communion every Sunday. She truly loved a good, fizzy Pepsi.

Memorial Contributions and Final Arrangements

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Taffy’s Touch Senior Dog Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and care of older dogs. This request aligns with Mathis’s lifelong affinity for animals.

The final gathering for friends and family will take place at Nebo Memorial Park. This Martinsville location serves as the final resting place for Mathis.
