Old Trafford Turf Sales and Debt Realities
In a move that drew significant mockery from critics, Manchester United has begun selling 7cm by 7cm cubes of the Old Trafford pitch for £125m. The initiative was launched on the same day the club reported its total debt had fallen to £1.1billion.
Despite the criticism, the first batch of turf pieces has already sold out. The pitch itself was relaid over the summer for the first time in 14 years, making the sale of the old turf a convenient, if controversial, revenue stream.
