Obituary of Jerry C. Ross: US Air Force Veteran and Forest Service Lookout
Jerry C. Ross, an 83-year-old Air Force veteran, seasonal United States Forest Service lookout, and Idaho rancher who spent decades working outdoors and embracing new technology, died peacefully at his home on October 6, 2026, potterchapel.com reported.
Early Life and Air Force Service in Vietnam
Born in 1943 to parents Robert and Melissa Ross in Mt. Gay, West Virginia, Ross enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1962 to avoid becoming a coal miner at his family’s urging. That decision launched a 23-year military career.
His service began in Vietnam working with munitions, where potterchapel.com noted he painted Jane Fonda’s face on bombs destined for delivery to the enemy. From Vietnam, his assignments took him to Taiwan and various missile silos and bases before he concluded his active duty at Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho, retiring as a Master Sergeant in base supply in 1990 following a re-enlistment in 1979.
Building a Life in the Idaho Backcountry
During a gap between his military enlistments, Ross worked seasonally for the U.S. Forest Service in Idaho City. There, he met Carol. The couple married in 1978 at the Base Chapel at Gowen Field in Boise.
Following his military retirement, Ross transitioned into a second seasonal career manning fire lookout towers. His posts included Tripod Peak near Cascade, Thunderbolt Lookout, Scout Mountain lookout, and finally Dixie Mountain in Oregon, where he finished his lookout career in 2012.
Over four decades in Idaho, Ross spent weekends snowmobiling, camping, fishing, hunting, and raising beef cattle on his ranch near Gardena. His daughter Anne recalled in a published tribute that her father was an avid elk hunter who loved setting up camp deep in the woods.
Ross Is Survived by Family and Has Memorial Service
Ross is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol, along with his son Jeremy, daughter Anne, and several grandchildren and extended family members. His son Jeremy assisted him with home repairs, electronics, and daily care as he became homebound, while daughter Anne shared a mutual sweet tooth and a long tradition of trying new restaurants and going to the movies.
A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Potter Funeral Chapel, located at 228 E. Main St. in Emmett, Idaho. A procession to the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise will follow, featuring military honors and a short service at 1:00 PM.
