Obituary: Domingo del Prado, Renowned Spanish Writer and Caricaturist

September 2, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Domingo del Prado Almanza, a prominent Spanish writer, satirical cartoonist, and educator known for a versatile career blending sharp verse with visual humor, died at the age of 70, according to reports from La Bañeza Al Día. Born in Pobladura de Yuso, León, in 1956, his death on September 2, 2026, marks the quiet conclusion of a decades-long creative footprint that stretched across provincial newspapers, poetry collections, children’s literature, and local pedagogy.

A Legacy Forged in Word and Image

Del Prado built a distinct creative identity defined by the continuous interaction between text and illustration. After completing his degree in Educational Sciences at the University of Salamanca, he worked for years as a teacher in León, Zamora, and Ávila, eventually serving as a technology advisor at the CFIE in Ávila.

His graphic work crystallized in biographical volumes like Gentes de León in 1984 and Gentes de Ávila in 1994, which paired pen portraits with caricatures of regional figures. Over the decades, his illustrations and satirical verse appeared in publications such as Diario de León, El Adelanto de Salamanca, Diario de Ávila, and El Adelanto Bañezano. He also maintained regular newspaper columns utilizing playful variations of his own name, including ‘El humor del Domingo’, ‘Los lunes de Domingo’, and ‘Los viernes domingueros’.

Satirical Verse and Public Recognition

The convergence of current events and traditional poetic forms formed a cornerstone of his output. Del Prado specialized in political and social satirical romance poems, collecting them in volumes such as Versos y reVersos. Romancero político-jocoso in 2023 and, more recently, Como Pedro por su casa, which was presented in May at the Municipal Auditorium of San Francisco in Ávila with a prologue by poet Antonio Colinas.

Beyond contemporary satire, his extensive bibliography spans children’s and youth literature—with titles including Los pastorcitos de Primaria, Belén, siglo XXI, and Marcianos en Belén—as well as sports-themed verse like 2008’s Romances en bici. His literary and pedagogical contributions earned multiple honors, including the I National Poetry Prize Tostón or Cochinillo de Arévalo in 2003, the ‘Abulense 2002’ award, and the III National Poetry Prize Charo González in 2010.

Final Appearances and Cultural Impact

Del Prado maintained active ties to his roots throughout his later years. In June, he appeared at the Book Fair in La Bañeza to present El viaje de Biruja under the auspices of the Fundación Conrado Blanco, as noted by La Bañeza Al Día. He had been scheduled to return to La Bañeza to host the Versos a Charo Recital.
