Obama Condemns Trump’s Racist Video Depicting Him and Michelle as Monkeys

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Former President Barack Obama publicly addressed a racist video depicting himself and his wife, Michelle Obama, as apes, characterizing the incident as part of a broader decline in political discourse and a loss of “decorum” in public life. The video, initially posted on Donald Trump’s Truth Social account earlier this month, was subsequently removed following widespread condemnation.

Speaking on the podcast hosted by Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama stated that a majority of Americans discover such behavior “deeply troubling,” though he did not directly name his successor or reiterate specifics of the video. He described the incident as a “clown reveal” fueled by social media and television, lamenting a perceived erosion of respect for the office of the presidency. “There doesn’t seem to be any shame about this among people who used to experience like you had to have some sort of decorum and a sense of propriety and respect for the office,” Obama said, according to a report by Deadline.

The video, which appeared at the complete of a clip purporting to debunk claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election, showed the faces of Barack and Michelle Obama superimposed onto animated apes dancing to the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The Independent reported that the post drew swift rebuke across the political spectrum, with some describing it as “disgusting” and “racist.”

Initial responses from the White House were contradictory. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt initially defended the post, claiming it was a parody referencing Disney’s The Lion King. Yet, a senior White House official later stated that the video was posted “erroneously” by a staffer, and that the employee had not been fired, according to reports from CNBC and The Hill. Trump himself claimed he had not seen the full video and was unaware of the imagery at the end.

The incident is not isolated. Trump has a history of animosity towards Barack Obama, frequently referring to him by his middle name, Hussein, and promoting conspiracy theories questioning his birthplace and legitimacy as president. As reported by PennLive, the post sparked outrage on Truth Social itself, with numerous users condemning the imagery as racist.

The White House has not issued further comment regarding the staffer involved in the posting, and no personnel changes have been announced. The incident continues to draw criticism from Democratic lawmakers and civil rights groups, with many calling for a stronger condemnation from Republican leaders.
