NZ TV Star Jaquie Brown Diagnosed with Breast Cancer
New Zealand television personality Jaquie Brown has revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April, sharing details of her ongoing recovery and treatment plan with the public. Brown, 50, underwent a mastectomy in May after discovering an Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer (ILC) that standard mammograms failed to detect.
The Routine Mammogram That Missed an Invasive Tumour
Brown shared her diagnosis in an Instagram post, explaining that the tumour had been present for at least a couple of years despite her clear mammograms. ILC is the second most common type of breast cancer and is notoriously harder to detect through standard screenings because it is less likely to form a distinct lump. Reflecting on the physical and emotional toll, Brown described the ordeal as a profound shift in her body’s chemistry. She noted that tests confirmed the condition was not genetic, writing that her body followed a common recipe of environmental factors, age, and organic chance.
A Ten-Year Medical Regimen and Comedian Solidarity
Following her May surgery where the cancer was removed, Brown outlined a rigorous 10-year medical regimen designed to prevent recurrence. Her ongoing care involves radiation, infusions, further surgeries, injections, and pills to keep her body inhospitable to rogue cancer cells.

Kiwi comedian Dai Henwood—who has shared his own public cancer journey—helped prepare Brown for the realities of public diagnosis. Brown noted that Henwood taught her a vital lesson about visibility, stating that a diagnosis affects everyone who cares about the individual.

Advancing the National Conversation on Cancer Screening
As Brown transitions into what she calls the “wobbly adjust phase” with her sights set on thriving, her openness contributes to a wider cultural conversation around cancer awareness, routine screening limitations for specific cancer types like ILC, and the mental health toll of public medical journeys.
