NYCFC to Play Playoff Matches at Yankee Stadium, Regular Season Finale at Citi Field Amidst Local Baseball Teams’ Early Exits
NEW YORK – New York City FC will host their Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoff matches at yankee Stadium and will conclude their regular season against Seattle Sounders FC at Citi Field, benefiting from the early postseason exits of both the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.
For years, NYCFC has utilized both yankee stadium and Citi Field as home venues, a situation born from not having a soccer-specific stadium. This arrangement has ofen created scheduling uncertainty, particularly regarding playoff games. In 2025, the Mets’ failure to reach the postseason allowed NYCFC to confirm their Decision Day match against Seattle Sounders FC would be played at Citi field, providing fans with advance notice.
A similar situation unfolded in 2023, when the lack of a Mets or Yankees playoff run enabled NYCFC to host their Decision Day game at Citi Field. While the Pigeons secured a win against Chicago Fire FC that year, they did not qualify for the postseason.
This year, the Yankees reached the postseason but were eliminated in the American League Division Series, freeing up Yankee Stadium for NYCFC’s playoff run. The club has announced that any home matches in the MLS Cup Playoffs will be held at their primary venue.
NYCFC is currently in the postseason, and will learn if they have secured home-field advantage in the Round One Best-of-3 series after the conclusion of all Eastern Conference games this Saturday. Regardless, they are guaranteed to host at least one playoff game.
The club anticipates this return to Yankee Stadium will bolster their home advantage as they pursue another trophy. After 2025, NYCFC will have one remaining season of stadium uncertainty before a dedicated soccer stadium is expected to be completed.
