Temperatures to Soar to 95°F with Dangerous Humidity

New Yorkers are being warned to prepare for a significant shift in weather as extreme heat grips the city this week, peaking on Friday with temperatures expected to reach a sweltering 95°F. High humidity levels will compound the heat, creating dangerous conditions that could make it difficult to cool down.

Heat Builds Through the Week

The week began with milder temperatures, reaching 83°F on Monday and a projected 80°F today. However, the mercury is set to climb steadily, with highs of 83°F anticipated for Wednesday. Starting Thursday, the city will experience a substantial increase in heat, with some areas reaching 89°F.

By Friday, temperatures are forecast to hit 95°F, but “feels-like” temperatures could be even higher, reaching a staggering 102°F due to the oppressive humidity. The combination of heat and humidity poses a risk as sweat may not evaporate effectively, hindering the body’s natural cooling process.

Health Precautions Advised Amidst High Heat

Experts recommend crucial safety measures for residents to combat the intense heat. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities are vital. Coastal Areas See Milder Conditions

Areas along the coast, including Long Island, the Jersey Shore, and Connecticut, will experience warmer but generally more pleasant conditions without immediate rain. Long Island is set for highs of 75°F today, rising to 77°F on Wednesday. The Jersey Shore will see 76°F today and 80°F tomorrow, while Connecticut can expect 78°F on Tuesday and 82°F on Wednesday.

Weekend Outlook: Thunderstorms Loom

The weather pattern is expected to shift dramatically as the weekend approaches, with a chance of rain and thunderstorms developing. The National Weather Service predicts a 40% probability of showers and thunderstorms across all five boroughs—Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island—on Saturday, Saturday night, and Sunday.

Saturday’s forecast includes highs near 85°F with a chance of storms, a pattern that is likely to continue into Sunday, with temperatures dropping slightly to around 82°F. This outlook follows a period of record-breaking heat in parts of the US, with Phoenix, Arizona, experiencing over 20 consecutive days of temperatures at or above 110°F in July 2023 (National Weather Service).
