Islanders’ Top Pick Aitcheson Stays in OHL
Defenseman Kashawn Aitcheson to Return to Barrie Colts
New York Islanders 2025 first-round selection Kashawn Aitcheson will forgo NCAA options to return to the Ontario Hockey League’s Barrie Colts for the 2025-26 season, according to multiple reports.
Developmental Decision Made
The decision was confirmed by former OHL scout Ryan McArthur, who stated that the NCAA is not an option for Aitcheson. McArthur added that it “sounds like he will be back with Barrie” this fall. Aitcheson, the 17th overall pick in June’s NHL Draft, had previously kept his collegiate path open.
Aitcheson’s Impressive OHL Performance
Now 19, Aitcheson established himself as a formidable and physical defenseman in the OHL last season. He also made significant offensive strides, netting 26 goals, the third-highest total among OHL blueliners. He contributed 33 assists for 59 points in 68 games, with nine goals coming on the power play.
Refining Skills in Junior Hockey
While his goal-scoring prowess is considered NHL-ready, analysts believe his return to Barrie will allow him to hone his playmaking abilities and gain valuable experience. “He’s proven that he can score,” McArthur noted. “Now, going back to improve his playmaking abilities while playing 25 minutes a night is a good decision for his development.”
With other top OHL defensemen like Zayne Parekh and Sam Dickinson potentially moving to the NHL, Aitcheson could emerge as one of the league’s most dominant defensemen this season. For the Islanders, this means their highly-touted first-rounder will gain another year of top-pair experience before potentially vying for a roster spot in 2026-27.
Aitcheson’s commitment to the OHL mirrors the development path of other highly-touted defensemen. For instance, Owen Power, the first overall pick in 2021, played two seasons with the University of Michigan before joining the Buffalo Sabres, showcasing different but equally valid routes to the NHL (EliteProspects).
This decision ensures Aitcheson will receive significant ice time, allowing him to develop all facets of his game before making the transition to professional hockey.
