Nvidia Considers Investment in Mercor at $20 Billion Valuation

August 20, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Nvidia is currently in discussions to participate in a new funding round for data labeling provider Mercor, a move that would value the startup at $20 billion.

Strategic Capital Allocation in the Data Labeling Sector

The proposed $20 billion valuation marks a significant leap for Mercor, which was valued at $10 billion during its Series C round in October. According to reports, the company raised $350 million in that previous round, reflecting a five-fold increase over its Series B valuation.

Nvidia’s interest in Mercor is not an isolated event. The chip designer continues to hedge its data supply chain by maintaining relationships with other labeling firms, including Turing and Scale. Nvidia previously participated in Scale’s 2024 funding round, which established a $14 billion valuation for that entity.

Operational Risks and Legal Headwinds

While Mercor’s revenue from Nvidia has grown into the tens of millions of dollars quarterly, the company faces significant legal hurdles. In April, reports indicated that Mercor was served with at least seven class-action lawsuits following a reported data breach. The litigation alleges that the breach exposed sensitive contractor information, including facial biometric data, job interview recordings, and employee computer screenshots.

Mercor co-founder and CEO Brendan Foody has publicly disputed these claims, stating that the company looks forward to presenting facts at the appropriate time.

Building Infrastructure Through Compute Financing

Beyond individual startup investments, Nvidia is scaling its influence across the broader AI ecosystem. On August 10, the company announced partnerships with six financial institutions to establish independent compute platforms. This initiative aims to mobilize more than $500 billion in third-party capital to accelerate the buildout of global AI infrastructure.

These platforms are designed to provide Nvidia customers with access to dedicated capital pools at competitive rates.
