According to New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon, a 23-year-old university student was shot dead in his bed on Tuesday in Glen Alpine. This attack was followed swiftly on Wednesday by the fatal shooting of 40-year-old Joshua Macdonald at a Merrylands West property in broad daylight while two children were present in the front yard.

Police sources told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that Mr Macdonald had no criminal connections and it remained unclear why he was at the property, which is believed to be owned by an intended target who did not live there. Acting Premier Prue Car noted that the state government is actively evaluating whether current measures are sufficient to divert vulnerable youths away from these criminal syndicates.
