Novinky: EA closes BioWare and cancels a Mass Effect entry
BioWare Shuts Down After Three Decades
Electronic Arts is closing Canadian developer BioWare after more than three decades in operation, cutting approximately 400 jobs across its wider workforce and cancelling a planned entry in the Mass Effect series, Novinky reported.
The closure affects around 50 roles directly at BioWare, while the remaining layoffs form part of a broader corporate restructuring at Electronic Arts, according to reporting by Forbes Česko. The Canadian studio, founded in 1995, had established its reputation through genre-defining role-playing games including Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and the sci-fi franchise Mass Effect.
Shifting Priorities Amid Mixed Commercial Performance
The decision follows an internal memo cited by Bloomberg, in which company leadership stated that Electronic Arts has been re-evaluating its priorities to concentrate developers and financial resources on projects holding the strongest potential for long-term growth.

E15.cz reported that the studio’s standing had been weakened in recent years by mixed commercial performances, including the online-focused action game Anthem and the 2024 release Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which fell short of internal sales targets.
The End of a Long-Awaited Mass Effect Project
Sources noted that the cancellation affects a new Mass Effect project that had been announced initially in 2020. Though the title had spent several years since its initial announcement, it remained in early development, with much of the team’s capacity dedicated to finishing Dragon Age: The Veilguard prior to the shutdown.

Saudi Led Consortium Acquires Electronic Arts for $55 Billion
The structural changes at Electronic Arts unfold following the company’s acquisition by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, a transaction finalized on August 4 that valued the publisher at roughly $55 billion. While outlets such as Forbes Česko note that available statements do not directly tie the buyout to the studio’s closure, the timing coincides with significant operational realignment.
Uncertainty Ahead for Franchises and Media Adaptations
Konsole.cz highlighted a farewell statement issued by BioWare reflecting on its 30-year history as a home for storytelling and player-driven adventures.
Beyond the immediate cancellation of the Mass Effect continuation, questions remain regarding external media adaptations, including an upcoming television series based on Mass Effect that was previously in production through a partnership between Electronic Arts and Amazon, as reported by sources. Electronic Arts has not clarified whether the Mass Effect intellectual property will be transferred to another internal development team.
