Tennis legend John McEnroe has expressed concern over Novak Djokovic‘s current form, suggesting the Serbian might potentially be entering a decline and questioning his motivation to compete against emerging stars like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Following Djokovic’s significant defeat to Sinner in the Wimbledon semifinals, McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, shared his apprehension about the 24-time Grand Slam winner’s future prospects.”it’s the first time I look at him and think: ‘I’m not sure I’m going back’,” McEnroe stated in comments to ‘Tennis365’.
McEnroe further speculated on Djokovic’s willingness to except a position where he is no longer the undisputed top player. “I don’t know if he can accept being one or two steps below these types (Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz),” he added.
The former champion drew parallels between Djokovic’s potential situation and the career trajectories of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who have both navigated the later stages of their careers. “He has finally joined the multitude of veteran champions who realize that the best has already happened and they have to assume it,” McEnroe concluded.
