The ministry alleges that the group was in possession of “false documents” and entered the country illegally with the intent to conduct acts of “terrorism and sabotage.” This characterization is central to the state’s current investigation into his activities.

Nguyen is a known member of Viet Tan, a political organization that advocates for democracy and human rights in Vietnam. While Viet Tan operates legally in countries such as Australia, the Vietnamese government classifies the group as a terrorist organization.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has previously criticized the Vietnamese government’s use of this “terrorist” designation, framing the organization as a legitimate political opposition movement. A primary concern for the family is his health; Nguyen requires daily insulin injections to manage his diabetes, and they have voiced alarm regarding his access to medical care while in detention.
