Norway Shatters EV Sales Record: nearly 98% of New Cars Sold in November are Electric
Oslo, Norway – December 4, 2025 – Norway experienced an unprecedented surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption in November, with fully electric cars accounting for a remarkable 97.6% of all new car sales. This represents a 70% increase in overall car sales compared to the same period last year, driven by consumer anticipation of upcoming tax changes.
The dramatic shift underscores Norway’s position as a global leader in sustainable transportation and signals a potential tipping point for EV adoption across Europe. The country is on track to become the first nation to effectively phase out sales of new gasoline and diesel vehicles by the end of 2025, achieving this ambitious goal through incentives, infrastructure development, and market-driven policies rather than outright bans.
Leading the charge in this electric revolution is Tesla, which surpassed its previous annual sales record a month before year-end. The American EV manufacturer sold 6,215 vehicles in November alone, bringing its total sales for the first eleven months of 2025 to 28,606 units – exceeding the 26,575 units Volkswagen sold across all of 2016. The Tesla Model Y was the primary driver of this success, contributing significantly to the company’s 34.6% sales increase.
“There is a real car bonanza in Norway at the moment,” stated Geir Inge Stokke, director general of the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV),to Reuters. The surge in purchases is largely attributed to buyers rushing to acquire EVs before new taxes are implemented in January 2026.
