Teen Charged with First-Degree Murder in Fatal Shooting of 8-Year-old in North York
Toronto police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with the August 16th shooting death of eight-year-old JahVai Roy, who was struck by a stray bullet while in bed at his North York apartment.
Roy was lying in bed with his mother near Martha Eaton way and Trethewey Drive just after midnight when he was hit. He was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Police Chief Myron Demkiw announced Wednesday that the teenager, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, has been charged with first-degree murder and five firearm offences. He was arrested on Friday and was allegedly in possession of a loaded, modified firearm capable of automatic fire at the time of his arrest.
Two other suspects remain at large: Ibrahim Ibrahim, 17, and Amarii Lindner, 18, both of Toronto. Lindner was 17 at the time of the shooting. Both are wanted for first-degree murder.
“If you know where they are and are found to be harbouring them or aiding them in any way, we will investigate and lay charges as appropriate,” Demkiw stated.
Detective-Sgt. Jason Davis of the homicide and missing persons unit confirmed that while roy was not the intended target, the shooting is believed to have been pre-planned, justifying the first-degree murder charge. Davis believes the outstanding suspects remain in the city.
Police previously released images of a white Acura seen fleeing the scene, confirming Wednesday that the vehicle was connected to the suspects.
The shooting has sparked renewed calls for action against gun violence in Toronto, including a petition urging government intervention.
