North Texans Set to Donate Up to $70 Million in 24-Hour Giving Spree

DALLAS-FORT WORTH (November 9, 2023) ‍ – North Texans are poised to⁢ contribute up to $70 million to over 3,500 local charities and nonprofits today as part of North Texas Giving Day, one of ⁣teh nation’s largest single-day giving events. Organized by the Communities⁣ Foundation of Texas, the 24-hour campaign aims to bolster vital services across ‍the region.

Among the organizations benefiting from the outpouring of ‍support is‍ the Nexus Family and ‌Recovery Center in dallas, a crucial resource for women and children battling substance ⁢use.NBC DFW spoke with angelia Wilson, a former patient who⁢ now works as a receptionist at Nexus, illustrating the ‌transformative impact of the center.

“I⁤ didn’t have to‍ keep living the way ‌that I was, being in⁤ trouble. I didn’t have to ‍deal with life’s hard times by using,” Wilson shared, recounting her three-month journey to recovery at Nexus. “they ‌helped find love for myself. They loved me until I was able to love myself and ⁣give⁤ me the confidence that I⁤ lost. They gave me the confidence that I could continue to live my life.”

Nexus provides⁢ a lifeline for ⁣approximately 100 women daily, alongside‍ care for up to 40 children.CEO and President Heather Ormand emphasized the importance of supporting families as a whole. “We no mom⁤ can’t get better and focus on herself unless she knows her kids are safe and protected as well,” she explained.

The center is hoping to raise $100,000 ⁢- roughly 5% of its annual operating budget – through North Texas giving Day.‌ These funds will directly support five- to ten-day ⁣detox treatments and one- to three-month residential programs for women⁤ and children struggling with addiction. Ormand has‌ even added a personal incentive: she’s promised to go skydiving if the $100,000 goal ⁣is⁣ met.

“We look at‌ recovery as this big⁢ step,a leap of faith, that we ask our⁢ clients to do every single day and to trust us,” Ormand said.

Robert Kent, from the⁢ Communities foundation of Texas, highlighted the broader impact⁢ of‍ the giving day.‍ “People have to go⁢ out and actually do the work, whether ⁤its working in our schools, supporting our healthcare system, or working on projects like this that Nexus is doing. It all takes people, and it takes resources to make happen.”

The Communities Foundation of Texas partners ⁢with a diverse range of nonprofits, from established organizations like ⁣the Salvation Army to smaller community charities. Last year’s North texas Giving Day raised $70 million, and organizers are aiming to match or exceed that amount this year, filling a critical gap ‌in funding often left ‌by government and private sector ⁢support.
