Southport, North Carolina - A shooting at a waterfront bar in Southport Saturday night left three people dead and six injured, authorities said. Nigel Edge has been charged in connection with the incident, which police are calling a “premeditated” attack carried out from a boat.
The shooting occurred at the American Fish Company, a popular establishment located near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, approximately 30 miles south of Wilmington. Investigators from the Brunswick county Sheriff’s Office, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the Coast Guard are at the scene collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
According to Southport Police Chief coring,the initial reports of eight injured were revised to six,all of whom are receiving treatment at local hospitals. Their conditions have not been released. The victims’ identities have not yet been publicly disclosed.
“It’s a very tragic night” for the close-knit coastal community, Coring stated. “We’re a small community, one of the communities where everybody knows everybody.”
The incident prompted an initial active shooter response, with residents urged to shelter in place and report any suspicious activity. Authorities have as confirmed there is no longer a threat to the public.A motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
