Slick Roads Expected as Temperatures Drop Across North Alabama
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — As temperatures fall across North Alabama this evening, the focus of weather concerns is shifting from standing water to the advancement of black ice and dangerously slick roadways. The rapid temperature drop following recent rainfall creates ideal conditions for ice formation, notably on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook earlier today, warning of overnight temperatures plummeting into the low 30s and upper 20s. This meaningful cooling, combined with residual moisture on roadways, poses a serious threat to drivers.
“the biggest concern isn’t necessarily snow or sleet, but the invisible danger of black ice,” explains meteorologist Sarah Thompson with WAFF 48 News. “Black ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice that forms when water freezes on the road surface. It’s incredibly arduous to see, making it particularly hazardous.”
Local authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution. The Huntsville Police Department has issued a statement advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel after dark. If travel is unavoidable, they recommend reducing speed significantly, increasing following distance, and being prepared for sudden braking.
“Even if the roads *look* wet, they could be coated in a thin layer of ice,” warns Officer David Miller of the huntsville Police Department. “It’s better to arrive late than to risk a serious accident.”
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) crews are actively pre-treating roadways with brine, a salt water solution that lowers the freezing point of water. Though, the effectiveness of brine diminishes as temperatures continue to fall. ALDOT officials state that crews will continue to monitor conditions and deploy additional resources as needed.
Residents are also advised to take precautions around their homes. Frozen pipes are a concern with the extended cold temperatures. The American Red Cross offers guidance on preventing frozen pipes and staying safe during winter weather events.
The hazardous conditions are expected to persist through early tomorrow morning. Temperatures are forecast to rise above freezing by mid-morning, gradually improving road conditions. However, lingering ice patches may remain in shaded areas.
