Potsdam Elects Noosha Aubel as new Mayor
Potsdam, Germany – Noosha Aubel has been elected the new mayor of Potsdam, Germany, succeeding Mike Schubert. Aubel, a former Flensburg city councilor and administrator in Potsdam, secured the position as a non-party candidate with support from diverse political groups.
Aubel’s path to the mayoralty followed a notable departure from the Potsdam governance in 2023, after a disagreement with then-mayor Schubert. She stated at the time, via her homepage, that she “realized that with my work in Potsdam I could no longer achieve the impact that you as citizens shoudl expect.” However, speculation persisted regarding a potential return to politics, as noted by taz, with reports suggesting “she wasn’t completely gone.”
Prior to her election, Aubel held the third-highest administrative position in Flensburg, where she focused on issues such as improving the Südermarkt area, addressing concerns related to homelessness, and enhancing the feeling of security for local businesses. She described improving these conditions as one of her “heart projects.”
Aubel’s background includes a degree in educational sciences and organizational management, and she previously managed the youth welfare office in Hilden, north Rhine-Westphalia,starting in 2008. She initially moved to the Potsdam administration in 2017, holding a similar role to her position in Flensburg.
During her campaign, Aubel garnered endorsements from “The Other” local party, Volt, and the “Alliance for Reason and Justice.” Recognizing the diverse coalition, she stated her intention to govern through “changing majorities and fact-oriented decisions.” She was initially elected in Flensburg in February 2024, receiving praise from green Party parliamentary group leader Katja Claussen, who described her as “versatile, experienced, resolute, solution-oriented and will bring a breath of fresh air to the city.” Aubel is married to Potsdam politician Sascha Krämer.
