No. 9 Maryland Women’s Basketball Defeats Towson 88-70, Remains Undefeated
COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 9 University of Maryland women’s basketball team continued its winning streak with an 88-70 victory over Towson on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at the Xfinity Center. The Terrapins moved to 3-0 on the season, showcasing both depth and returning talent in a dominant performance.
Maryland’s perfect start underscores their position as a leading contender in the Big Ten Conference and nationally. The win highlights the team’s ability to overcome challenges and integrate key players, like returning guard Kaylene Smikle, back into the lineup. The Terps will next face Princeton on November 16, seeking to maintain their momentum as they navigate a challenging non-conference schedule.
Maryland coach Brenda Frese emphasized the team’s ongoing growth, stating, “We have depth, but we have a lot of work to do.” The Terrapins demonstrated that depth with a balanced scoring attack, led by strong performances from multiple players.
The return of Kaylene smikle proved pivotal, with Frese noting, “Having Smikle back is everything. You can see what she brings to the table in a short amount of time with limited reps. Only KK could come back and do what she did so soon.” Smikle’s impact was immediately felt, contributing to the team’s offensive flow and defensive intensity.
Sophomore guard Gia Garzon also had a standout night, fueled by confidence from her coaches and teammates. “My coaches and my teammates give me great confidence in myself,” Garzon said.
Looking ahead, Maryland prepares for a Sunday matchup against a seasoned Princeton team. Frese acknowledged the challenge, saying, “It’s a really good Princeton team coming in on Sunday with a lot of experience.” The game is scheduled for 1 PM and will be broadcast on B1G+.
