Astound Broadband is preparing to begin work expanding high-speed internet access to more than 3,500 homes in the Nisqually region of Washington state, offering symmetrical speeds up to 5 Gigabits per second. The expansion will focus on rural areas of Pierce County, addressing a longstanding need for improved connectivity.
The project builds upon a $7.15 million investment pledged by Pierce County to improve internet access in underserved areas. Even though, one initial plan for the deployment was ultimately scrapped before Astound Broadband was selected to carry out the work, according to reporting from the Tacoma News Tribune. Details surrounding the abandoned plan were not immediately available.
Residents in rural parts of Pierce County have long faced limited options for high-speed internet, hindering access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities. The upgrades, announced by FOX 13 Seattle, are intended to bridge this digital divide and provide residents with reliable, modern internet service.
The Nisqually region expansion is part of a broader effort to improve broadband infrastructure across Washington state. Astound Broadband’s work is expected to begin shortly, with a specific timeline for completion not yet released. The company will be deploying fiber-optic cables to deliver the high-speed service.
The investment in rural broadband infrastructure reflects a growing recognition of internet access as an essential service. The upgrades are expected to benefit residents, businesses, and community organizations throughout the region. Pierce County officials have not yet commented on the selection of Astound Broadband or the details of the contract.
