Nintendo Profit Surges 53.5% Driven by Switch 2 and Super Mario Movie
Nintendo Co. reported a 53.5% surge in April-June profit to 147.4 billion yen ($933 million), driven by strong global demand for the Switch 2 console and the box office success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, despite facing supply chain headwinds and a 9.5% drop in quarterly sales.
According to corporate earnings data released on Thursday, profit rose sharply from 96 billion yen in the same period a year prior. However, quarterly sales dipped to 517.8 billion yen ($3.3 billion), down 9.5% year-over-year.
Hardware Momentum and Software Adoption Metrics
Nintendo reported that Switch 2 console sales totaled 3.82 million units globally since its launch in June of last year. Crucially, the legacy Switch ecosystem continues to generate revenue across both hardware and software divisions, preventing the steep revenue cliffs historically associated with console transitions.
Software sales reached 9.46 million units for the quarter. Standout titles included “Yoshi and the Mysterious Book,” released in May, alongside the enduring performance of “Pokemon Pokopia,” which debuted last year. Executives hope to maintain this volume with recent additions such as “Splatoon Raiders,” which launched last month, and upcoming titles including “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.”

Looking ahead to the remainder of the fiscal year ending March 2027, Nintendo projects net profit to reach 310 billion yen ($2 billion). This forecast represents a nearly 27% decline from the previous fiscal year, driven by an anticipated 11% slip in annual sales to 2.05 trillion yen ($13 billion).
Management expects Switch 2 console unit sales to reach 16.5 million for the full fiscal year, marking a 17% reduction compared to the initial launch year, aligning with historical sales curves where console velocity moderates following the debut period. Conversely, software sales projections are targeted higher at 60 million units for the fiscal year, representing a 23% increase.
Public markets responded favorably to the earnings report. Nintendo shares jumped 2.9% in Tokyo trading following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s diversified revenue mix between cinematic intellectual property and console gaming.
